1908 Social Service League becomes first private social service agency in Montgomery County, Maryland

1911 Professional staff begins with hiring of nurse as "friendly visitor for the sick," pioneering tuberculosis control and physical exams in schools

1930s League personnel train social workers from University of Maryland and Catholic University


1942 League is founding member of Montgomery County Community Chest and Counsel


1959 League changes name to Family Services, Agency; wins first Margaret E. Rich Award for social action on behalf of families

1960s Agency Provides family counseling services with social work staff

1970s With State funds, Agency starts first County psycho-social rehabilitation program for severally mentally ill people

Develops first Employee Assistance Program, opens Montgomery House

1971 The Montgomery County Health Fund is merged into Family Services

1978 Family Services develops the first Employee Assistance Program used by the national Family Service Association of America as model for their national contract with Xerox

1980s Agency is awarded only County contract by State Juvenile Services Administration for innovative outreach services to multi-delinquent youth on probation

According to US Census Bureau, voters in Montgomery County's 8th congressional district are the wealthiest and best educated of the country's 435 congressional districts


1986 City of Rockville awards a community service block grant to Family Services for the Service for Seniors program

1989 "Partners in Caring" program for at-risk children begins at Summit Hall Elementary School with funding from City of Gaithersburg and Clark Winchole Foundation


1990 Organization changes name to Family Services Agency, Inc. (FSAI)


1995
FSAI received funding to open first certified Healthy Families site in Maryland using national model


1996 Agency is awarded Head Start funding to implement Early Head Start program in up-county area serving children from birth to 3 years old

1998 FSAI affiliates with Sheppard and Enoch Pratt Foundation


2000 Child Development Center opens to provide onsite services to Early Head Start Families


2002 FSAI dedicates Multi-Service Center for Children and Families


2004 Group expands services to include neo-natal screenings at Shady Grove and Holy Cross Hospitals, family preservation, and enhanced bi-lingual services


2007 FSAI's Parent Leadership Institute (PLI) is nationally recognized by U.S. Department of Education


2008 County-wide Healthy Families Montgomery program releases 11-year study finding reductions in child abuse and neglect through home visiting services

Organization changes name to Family Services, Inc. (FSI)

Organization celebrates 100th anniversary


2009 Family Services, Inc. is awarded a $1.4 million HUD grant to rehabilitate homes for people with mental illness

Watch Me Grow, a program of Family Services, Inc., becomes first child development center to open in Clarksburg, MD

Montgomery Station marked its 30th anniversary of offering psychiatric rehabilitation services, including residential and vocational programs, to the Montgomery County community

Family Services, Inc. partners with Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services, Impact Silver Spring, Interfaith Works, and the City of Gaithersburg to open the first Neighborhood Service Center. The center provides assistance in applying for basic need services, such as food, shelter, clothing, health and mental health care

Montgomery Station becomes first psychiatric rehabilitation program to be CARF (Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities) accredited in Montgomery County, MD

Early Head Start receives $1.7 million to expand school readiness and child development program, allowing EHS to serve 72 additional infants, toddlers and pregnant women in northern Montgomery County, MD


2010 The HSC Foundation awards Family Services, Inc. a grant for $11,000 for the Life Enrichment Awards Program (LEAP). The purpose of LEAP is to enrich the lives of youth and young adults with disabilities and chronic illness and provide goods and services directly linked to youth transition planning and implementation
